In collaboration with the Alabama Folklife Association, the Landmarks Foundation hosts Orran Scruggs, a classically trained artist born in Huntsville, AL. He attended Alabama A&M University in Normal, AL, where he studied Commercial Art and   Advertising/Print Management. During his studies, he developed a passion for figure drawing, oil painting, ceramics, and photography. These skills have sustained Orran throughout his career as an illustrator, painter, and graphic designer.

 

Three years ago, he discovered a new medium for expressing his artistic abilities: carving wooden spoons and utensils. This led to the creation of his wooden utensil brand, “The MaeLou Collection.” This endeavor has provided him with supplemental income and allowed Orran to share his handcrafted works with the world. The public's positive reception has been immensely gratifying, and he finds great joy in creating these pieces and teaching the world.
