LANDMARKS FOUNDATION
The Landmarks Foundation is a nonprofit community-based preservation organization in Montgomery, Alabama. Throughout its history, Landmarks has identified at-risk historic properties, raised public awareness of their significance, and preserved them.
Since its beginning, Landmarks has worked in partnership with the city of Montgomery to create and manage Old Alabama Town, a collection of historic structures. The first preservation effort of this collaboration was the acquisition and restoration of the Ordeman-Mitchell-Shaw Complex, an 1850s Italianate townhouse, outbuildings, enslaved quarters, and grounds, in 1968. The house and grounds were restored and opened to the public in 1971, forming Old Alabama Town's cornerstone.
Today our museum features over 50 structures, some of these historic buildings function as house museums, while others are leased to local startups and non-profits. Interpreting the museum structures is essential to ensuring our past is present in Old Alabama Town. Each structure is historically, architecturally, and culturally accurate in telling our history.
