Start your tour of the Living Block >> through Lucas Tavern. This site exhibits urban and rural vernacular structures, simple constructions where people gathered to share ambitions, longings, and aspirations, all crucial parts of the social fabric of 19th-century everyday life.

The Ordeman-Mitchell-Shaw House >> is an Italianate townhouse on its original site at 230 North Hull St. The enslaved quarters and kitchens were completed at the same time as the house, circa 1853. These brick structures are the only remaining examples of urban slavery in Montgomery.

Enter the Working Block >> through the Rose House dogtrot to begin your tour. In the structures in this block, you will see how people worked, labored, and produced in central Alabama in the 19th and early 20th centuries. You will see the workplaces and many tools used in urban and rural areas.
